Maintenance of artificial eyes is commonly overlooked. Artificial eyes should be checked and polished at least on an annual basis by an ocularist to minimise the risk of socket problems e.g. inflammation and chronic discharge.
The daily use of artificial tear substitutes is highly recommended. We recommend Systane drops for this. They have proved to be the best artificial tear substitute currently available for patients with an artificial eye. They should be used 3-4 times a day. For patients who have an allergy to preservatives, preservative free Systane is also available.
For patients with an artificial eye who develop crusting of the eyelids and lashes, we recommend the use of Blephaclean wipes.
